The first bar chart illustrates the number of marriages and divorces in the USA during the period of 1970 and 2000. The second bar chart compares adult Americans's marital status between these two years.
First of all, the proportion of marriages in America had a drop from 1970 to 2000 whereas the rate of divorces fluctuated. According to comparison between 1970 and 2000, there was a slightly increase in the percentage of adults who never married or divorced. In constrast, the number of married and widowed adult Americans had a slightly drop.
In 1970, there were 2.5 million marriages in the USA. This rate remain stably in 1980 before falling down by 0.5 million in the year 2000. During 1970 and 2000, the number of divorces fluctuated. First, it was only 1 million then reached a peak at nearly 1.5 million in 1980. At last, it came to 1 million again in 2000.
From the second bar chart, we can see precise details about marriage status of adult Americans. Less and less people get married. More than 10% decrease in the percentage of married adults in 30 years from 1970 to 2000. In contrast, more and more people get divorced. A very small amount of divorced people could be found in 1970 but in 2000 it increased roughly by 3 times. Following this trend, the proportion of never married adults rose quickly through 30 years while there was a negligible change in the percentage of widowed adults.
