The given line charts illustrate what percentage of households in one country owned washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners and how much time per week a household there spent doing housework from 1920 to 2019.
In general, the most striking feature is that these three types of electrical appliances witnessed an increase in their popularity while the number of hours per week residents spent on household chores significantly went down over 99 years.
In terms of the ownership of electric devices, although no one obtained a refrigerator in their house in 1920, after 60 years, all households had their own refrigerators and this percentage remained steadily until 2019. As a result, refrigerators were the most popular electric appliances. Whereas there were also more people owning washing machines, but this proportion did not go up as dramatically as that of refrigerators. Therefore, at the beginning of this period, the percentage of households with washing machines was the highest, at 40 percent while in 2019, this percentage was the lowest, at approximately 75 percent. In addition, there was a significant increase in the proportion of families with vacuum cleaners from a third in 1920 to their peak of 100 percent in 2000, and then stayed stable until 2019.
Due to the development of electrical appliances, it took people less time to do their housework. The number of hours of housework per week showed a downward trend and hit a trough of roughly 10 percent in 2019, which was only one-fifth of that figure in 1920.
