The charts below show the growth in the population in some of the world’s largest cities as well as the population distribution in urban and rural areas.

The charts demonstrate the rise in population number in different metropolitan cities, besides the allocation of population in cities and villages. Looking from an overall perspective, Tokyo has topped the charts through the years, whilst population growth was more rapid in Bombay and Jakarta. In addition, more people started living in cities rather than rural areas as time passed.

Looking into details of the bar graph, Tokyo came first with population number higher than 25 million in 2010. Followed by Bombay, which has witnessed a significant increase in population number having exactly 5 million citizens back in 1970 compared to 27 million in 2010. Also, Shanghai ranked third in 2010 followed by Jakarta and New York respectively.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that in 1950, New York had the highest population of exactly 12.5 million, followed by London, Tokyo, Paris and Moscow, subsequently. Whereas, Tokyo came first in 2010 with approximately 27.6 million citizens, hence Bombay and Lagos came second and third, as New York fell out of the top 5.

However, it can by noted that more people started to favour living in urban areas rather than rural ones. 3 million lived in villages in 1980 and below 2 million lived in cities. While in 2010, slightly above 4 million lived in suburbs compared to nearly 3 million who preferred living in the countryside.
