The charts below show the growth in the population in some of the world’s largest cities as well as the population distribution in urban and rural areas.
The bar chart reveals the population growth that happened in 5 cities in the year of 1970, 1990 and 2010, while the table details the top five largest cities ranking in terms of the population. Meanwhile, the line chart given compares the population growth in the rural and urban area over the world.
It is clear that while a significant increase in the population can be witnessed in the five biggest cities over the four decades, the ranking of the top 5 most dense cities changed greatly. Moreover, population growth in rural and urban area saw a conflicting trend - one was increasing and the other one was decreasing.
As shown in the data given in bar chart, evidently Tokyo was always in the dominant position in terms of population over the four decades, raising from staggering 15 millions in 1970, to 23 millions in 1990 and finally 28 millions in 2010. Likewise, a similar pattern can be noticed in Shanghai, where number of residents increased twofold from 1970 to reach 21 millions in 2010. Noteworthy is the fact that while the growth in New York city was very stable, number of people in Bombay increased significantly from a mere 5 million to staggering 27 billions, just 1 billion less than that of Tokyo by 2010.
In regard to the most dense cities, evidently, all the cities except Tokyo were dropped out of the top 5 ranking, where Tokyo's population increased over 4 times and ranked at the top in 2010. In addition, the overall population in the top five ranking in 1950 was staggering 4 times smaller than that in 2010. Lastly, from 1990, while the number of people in rural area started decreasing, people living in urban cities grew significantly and overtook that in rural somewhere between 2000 and 2010. By 2010, number of people in rural and urban area were 3 billions and 4 billions respectively.
