The charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world.

The pie charts compare the distribution of water consumption by sector in six areas.
Overall, there is a clear difference in the pattern of water use between developing and developed areas. In Asia, Africa and South America, water is mostly used for agriculture while Europe and North America use the highest proportion of water for industry.

In Central Asia, South East Asia and Africa, over 80% of water is provided to agricultural use, compared to 71% in South America. However, South America uses a greater percentage of water for household needs, at 19%, which was twice the figures for the other three developing areas. Less than 10% of the total amount of water is for industrial use in Central Asia and Africa while the figures for South East Asia and South America are slightly higher, at 12 and 10% respectively

In Europe and North America, about half of water consumption is spent on industrial use. These two areas also use up a considerable propotion of water for agriculture, at over 30%. Both Europe and North America spend a similar percentage of water on domestic use, at 13 and 15% in turn.
