The two pie charts give information on the language abilities of British students at a university in the UK in 2000 and 2010. Overall, it is noticeable that students who could only speak English accounted for the largest proportion throughout the given period.
In 2000, 10% of the British students were able to use 2 languages other than their own mother tongue, which was a third of the proportion of students who can only speak English. Meanwhile, The percentage of students who can speak French or another language was slighly higher, at 15% each while the figure for Spanish speakers was 20%.
10 years later, the proportion of students who could use one foreign language excluding French, Spanish, and German rose by 5% to 20%. Similarly, the figures for monolinguals and trilinguals also increased to 20% and 30% respectively. By contrast, the percentage of Frech speakers decreased by 5% while that of Spanish dropped by a half. On the other hand, the figure for German users remained unchanged at 10%.
