The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in English who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 200 and 2010.
The two pie charts illustrate British colleagues at a university having the ability to speak foreign languages in England in the years 2000 and 2010.
Overall, students who could use no other language than English contributed the most to the chart, both in 2000 and 2010. In addition, at the beginning of the period, German only and two other languages made up the two smallest parts of the chart while the 3 lowest contributions at the end of the period were made by German only, Spanish only and French only sectors.
In 2016, students who communicated in English only experienced a 5-percent increase and accounted for just over one-third the total number. Also, the number of students who, apart from English, only capable of speaking French and another language except for French, Spanish and German in 2000 were 10% and 15% respectively, and these figures both rose by 5% after the 16-year phase.
In contrast, 2016 saw a 5% drop in French only sector. Spanish only proportion in 2000 is twice as much as in 2010 while the only segment remained unchanged was German only.
