Essay topics:

The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.

The tables reveal changes in British students’ ability to communicate in different languages besides English in a specific university in two separate years at 2000 and 2010. Overall, Spanish was by far the most used foreign language and German was the least used one.

Regarding the rate of people who could speak French and no other language, there was a downward trend can be seen over the period. To be exact, the figure for no other language dropped a half from 20% to 10% while that for French also witnessed a decrease but at a slower pace (from 15% to 10%).

By contrast, a different pattern can be seen in the remaining categories. In detail, the percentage of students who were able to speak Spanish stayed well beyond the others, taking the first position at 30% in 2000 and 35% in 2010 respectively. This was followed by the figure for another language and two other languages, increasing at an average of 5% for each after ten years. A noticeable point is shown in the category of “German only”, which remained stable at 10% over the period time.
