The pie charts illustrate the differences in the proportions of British students studying at England’s university who could speak more than one language, besides native one, in two different years (2000 and 2010).
It can be seen from the charts that the most common additional language for British students was Spanish in 2000 as well as in 2010. In the first year the proportion of students speaking on it consisted of 30% and this than went up by 5% to 35% in 2010. In both years the minority of students could speak German, this did not change and accounted for 10%.
With regards to the remaining British students able to speak languages other than their maternal one, there were some changes over 10 years. Fewer British students spoke only English in 2010 (10% as opposed to 20% in 2000). The proportion of students preferred French fall by 5% (from 15% to 10%) in 2010, whereas the interest to another language increased and it constituted 20% in comparison to 15% in 2000. Besides, there was a 5% rise in the percentage of students who could speak two languages in addition to English (from 10% in 2000 to 15% in 2010).
Overall, the most popular language for British students was Spanish in both years. Also the percentage of students knowing only native language reduced in two times.
