The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.
The pie charts compare the percentages of British students in a particular England university who can speak another language aside from English in two separate years.
Overall, the vast majority of British students can speak at least one language as well as English in both years. It is also noticeable that Spanish was the most widely spoken second language among the group of surveyed students.
The number of British students who do not speak another language aside from English decreased from 20% in 2000 to 10% in 2010. Similarly, the figure for students who can only speak French dropped by 5% to 10% in 2010. In comparison with the proportion of students who can communicate using the German language, it remained stable at a tenth after 10 years.
For the remaining 3 categories; Spanish only, another language and two other languages, their figures rose by 5% in 2010, however, Spanish remained to be the common spoken foreign language with more than a third of the surveyed group. The proportions of students who can talk with another language and two other languages went up to a quarter and 15% respectively.
