The bar chart illustrates why Americans commuted while the pie chart compares the percentages of six main problems they encountered during their trips in the US in the year 2009.
It is clear from the graphs that the main reason US citizens traveled was coming to and from work. Additionally, the cost of travel in public was their biggest concern in the surveyed year.
Looking at the bar chart, in 2009, there were 49% of American people travel back and forth to work, which made up the biggest percentage. In comparison, visiting friends or relatives was the least reason for commuting, accounted for 6%. It is interesting to notice that 19% people in the US traveled for their own purposes, whereas reason for socializing or recreation was significantly lower, at only 10%.
Regarding the pie chart, more than a third of people complained about the money they had to spend for travel, which was approximately two-fold higher than the second place concern for safety (19%). Space for walkers and the accessibility to public transport were the least concern while travelling in the US, with 6% and 8% respectively.
