The diagram shows the process used to carve wooden shoes called clogs. There are 6 main stages, made all by hand so without the use automatic machines.
The first operation is to obtain wood from either poplar or willow trees. The log is cut with a saw into pieces. After this operation, with the use of an axe the piece of wood is cut to a proper size and then outlined in order to roughly form a shoe figure. Then with the help of a knife the piece of wood is defined into the proper shoe shape. Next, with a spoon drill the clogs are being bored out in order to fit the feet. Once this is done sandpaper is used smoothing down the wood on the inside and the outside of the clogs in order to define and finishing them. The final step is to decorate the completed wooden shoes with the use of different colours, although this step is optional. The clogs are now done and ready to be used.
This completes the process of making traditional wooden footwear, or clogs, by hand.
