The diagrams illustrate how salmon, which is a species of large fish, goes through its life cycle.
Overall, the fish goes through three major phases is its life time. It begins its journey in the slow flowing waters of upper river area and then returns here after a couple of years as an adult to complete the cycle.
Their circle of life starts with small eggs, that are laid underneath small stones covered with reeds, in calm waters of upper river area. After hatching, the baby fishes, which are known as 'fry' and measure between 3 to 5 cm in length, travel downstream to the fast flowing waters of lower river, where they stay for about 4 years. When these babies grow to about 12 to 15 cm, they move on to open sea and are now called 'smolt',. At sea, they spend approximately 5 years of their lives to attain adulthood. Due to this transformation to adult-form, salmon can now measure up to 76 cm in length.
Lastly, adult salmons make the arduous journey back up the river to the breeding grounds, where they lay eggs ultimately completing the cycle.
