Essay topics:

The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The first pie chart illustrates the proportion of energy use whilst the second pie chart demonstrates the proportion of the greenhouse gas emissions by the respective activities in an average Australia household.

Overall, while the energy is mainly spent on heating, the activity contributes the largest proportion of greenhouse gas emissions is, in fact, water heating. That is, if an activity consumes much energy, it is not necessarily that activity also emits a large amount of greenhouse gas.

Despite the fact that nearly a half of the total energy (around 42%) is spent on heating, only 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions are constituted by this activity. On the other hand, the proportions of the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are approximately the same for the water heating activity (30% and 32%, respectively) and the cooling activity (2% and 3%, respectively).

However, in other activities, the proportions of the total greenhouse gas they emit are twice as large as the proportion of the total energy spent on them, such as: refrigeration (14% and 7%, respectively), lighting (8% and 4%, respectively) and other appliances (28% and 15%, respectively).
