The first chart compares six sectors in which energy is used in a typical family in Australia, while the second one illustrates the corresponding amount of greenhouse gas created by each of them.
Overall, heating in general is the main purpose of energy use, and it is also the key factor contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
In an Australian household, heating and water heating respectively take up 42 and 30 percent of the total energy consumption. While that, other appliances account for 15 percent, and the energy used for cooling, refrigeration and lighting was quite inconsiderable, all at under one-tenth of the total amount.
Looking at the second chart, despite being the major purpose for energy use, heating only emits 15 percent of the overall greenhouse gas. Meanwhile, the most significant figure was in water heating, accounting for just under one-third. The proportion for other appliances is a bit smaller, at 28 percent, while refrigeration, lighting and cooling only contribute a small part, adding up to only 25 percent in total.
