The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The line graph and table compare the global water use by agriculture, industrial use, and domestic use between 1900 and 2000 and the water consumption in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000. Overall, a similar upward trend can be observed in the world water use. The water consumption per person in two different countries is proportional to their population and irrigated land.
To begin with, water used by agriculture occupied the most proportion, followed by industrial use and water was applied for domestic. There was a dramatic steady increase in the water used by agriculture, which started at 500 km2 then ended at 3000km2. The other two sectors both stared at a low point of roughly 0 km2. While industrial use rose significantly to approximately 1500 km2, there was a slight increase in the water was used by domestic to roughly 200 km2 over the period.
In the year 2000, the populations of Brazil and the Congo were 176 million and 5.2 million respectively. Water consumption per person in Brazil, at 359m³, was much higher than that in the Congo, at only 8m³, and this could be explained by the fact that Brazil had 265 times more irrigated land.
