The graph below compares changes in the birth rates of China and the USA between 1920 and 2000.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line chart makes a comparison between Chinese and the US birth rates over an 80-year period from 1920 to 2000.
A glance at the graph provided reveals striking similarities between the fertility of China and the USA during the time frame. Another interesting point is that whereas the birth rates of both countries were comparable until 1950, the gap between the two widened after this time as fertility in China began to slide away.
Looking at the details, increasing from a-tenth to 15% in 1935, the birth rate of China plunged to only 5% in 1940. This figure levelled off until 1945, at which point it experienced an exponential climb to one-fifth before dropping considerably to just under 10% by the year 1955. During the latter half of the century, the fertility of this country witnessed a steady decline.
As regards the USA, the birth rate fluctuated between 11 and 13 percent prior to 1940. This was followed by a rapid fall in the next 5 years, reaching somewhere in the vicinity of 5 percent. The following 5 years saw a marked growth of this figure, peaking at 15% in 1950, after which it underwent a sustained fall.
