The graph shows data about the proportion of urban residents who live in 4 countries in Asia, over a fifty-year period between 1970 and 2020, along with the data for the next twenty years.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there was a considerable upward trend in the percentage of people living in metropolises in all four countries. Another interesting point is that Indonesia was the country that contained the lowest proportion of city dwellers in 1970, but fifty years later, its data is in the second spot.
Looking at the details, as regards the Philippines, with about 32 percent at the start of 1970, then there was a fluctuation over the next 40 years, at which point it went up significantly and is predicted to reach approximately 50 percent in 2040. If we look at Thailand, the trend was similar. Having taken a fluctuation of around 30 percent in the first half of the century, the amount of population in urban areas compared to the whole country then is expected to rise sharply to nearly 50 percent in 2040, which will double the data from the beginning.
As for Malaysia, its data began at just 30 percent in 1970, it then skyrocketed to more than 70 percent in the next 50 years, and will continue to grow about 10 percent more which is the peak percentage of city dwellers during the whole period. With respect to Indonesia, it also saw a remarkable increase in the proportion of humans who settle in conurbations.
