The line chart illustrates how much electricity obtained from various sources (coal, natural gas, and petroleum) to supply New York City over two decades, from 1980 to 2000.
Overall, electricity from petroleum was by far the largest production among other types. Additionally, natural gas exploitation for electricity experienced the most significant increase, while the opposite was true for coal throughout the observed period.
In 1980, about 350 million kWh of electricity was produced from petroleum. The figure reached a peak of 600 million KWh in 1985 before decreasing sharply to under 400 million KWh in 1990. From then on, however, it increased substantially to a level of above 700 million KWh at the final research year.
In 1980, only 1000 million kWh of electricity was created. This figure remained stable during the first five years before rising significantly to approximately 450 million kWh in 1995. In addition, it experienced a slight rise of 50 million KWh by 2000.
In contrast, the figure for coal exploitation witnessed a converse trend, with roughly 200 million KWh produced in 1980, reaching a peak of over 300 million kWh in 1985. On the other hand, however, it dropped rapidly and remained constant at 200 million KWh during the last decade.
