The line chart illustrates the figure for average carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by each person in four different countries over a 40-years period. Units are measured in metric tonnes.
It is apparent that the UK had the highest amount of CO2-emitting, whereas the least emission of CO2 is in Portugal from 1967 to 2007. Overall, the proportions of CO2 output for Italy and Portugal show steady growth. Meanwhile, both Sweden and the UK indicate a decrease over the given period.
According to survey data, Portugal emitted over 1 metric tonne of CO2 in the first year, followed by an upswing to under 6 in 2007 (on a level with Sweden at this time). Likewise, the figure for CO2 emissions for Italy increased dramatically from over 4 in 1967 to under 8 (nearly double) in 1997, then leveled off for the remainder of the period.
On the other hand, the emissions of CO2 in Sweden began at under 9 in 1967, then reached a peak at over 10 metric tonnes in comparison to the figure for the UK which witnessed a marginal decrease in 1977, before hitting a free fall to under 6 in 2007. Notable, the amount of the UK emission CO2 is always the highest in all four nations though it shows a decline between 1967 to 2007.
