The graph below shows the different modes of transport used to travel to and from work in one European city in 1960, 1980 and 2000.

The bar graph gives information about four types of transportation ( bus, car, bike, foot) used for commuting in one European city in three different years-1960, 1980, 2000. Overall, car gained its popularity whereas, the number of people on foot decreased gradually.

Moving to a more detailed analysis, in 1960, traveling on foot was the most popular mode of transport (35%) in comparison to other forms. Bikes were equally important and 28% of people used them. 20% of people commuted by bus while only 8% of them used cars and was the least famous amongst all.

However in the year 1980, people preferred to travel by public transport more often(28%) which was the highest among all the other type of transportation. The percentage of car users grew dramatically reaching at 25% and the bikers declined slowly to around 25%. The people traveling on foot plunged to 18%.

Following that, in 2000, private cars soared and reached a peak of 38%. In contrast , the percentage of bikes reached a trough of 8% which was the same as cars in 1980. Although there was a drop in percentage of bus users to 18% , there was not much of a difference as compared to the beginning of 1980 which was 20%. Finally, we witnessed the further fall to 10% on people walking to work and coming back home thus showing our dependency on vehicles.

In a nutshell, on one hand, the percentage of people using cars showed remarkable rise, on the other hand, the amount of people walking or using bikes fell rapidly over the 40 years. Bus was the only form of transport that showed very little change.
