The line graph illustrates the concentrations of two air pollutants in London in the time span between 1600 and 2000. Units are measured in micrograms per cubic metre.
Overall, the two chemicals present a similar trend but SO2 had remained the most concentrated in air over all the years.
Just before 1600 when the industrial revolution had not yet started, pollution levels of the two chemicals were both low (around 0) and close to each other so that we can assume a common starting point. However, between 1600 and the following two hundred and seventy years, the pollutants saw a different growth in levels since the trend of sulphur dioxide, as the graph shows, is far steeper than that of smoke in this period of time. In fact, just in 1670 SO2 had a concentration of nearly 625 and smoke of only 240. The situation continued to be more or less the same except some rigid variations of sulphur dioxide which reached peaks at approximately 750 in 1725 and 875 by 1840.
In 1870, smoke and SO2 had reached their maximum at almost 475 and 875 respectively. After that, they began to decline rapidly with evident fluctuations between 1925 and 1970. The final picture is a return to their initial values near to zero in modern times (2000 year).
