The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph illustrates the amount of people aged 65 and more during the time of 1940 and 2040 in three countries: Japan, Sweden and USA. We can see that the number of old persons in these three countries grow through years and will reach over 20% of population in each country in 2040.
In 1940, this rate was only 5% in Janpan and approximately 10% in Western countries (approx. 7% in Sweden and approx. 9% in USA). The percentage of old people in Sweden and USA had a rise during 1990s whereas people aged 65 and over in Japan had a fall year by year before returning to 5% at the present.
In spite of some fluctuations, the proportion of elder people in three countries is predicted to increase in the next two decades. A more dramatical growth will occur in Japan with over 25% people aged 65 and more.
