The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph illustrates the amount of good transported by four distinct methods of transport in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
In general, most of the good was transported by road, and pipeline is the mode of transport that was chosen the least.
Specifically, 70 million tonnes of good was estimated to be transported by road in 1974. The figure fluctuated since then before rising dramatically after 1994 to just under 100 million tonnes in 2002. The number of good transported by pipeline, also increased significantly from around 3 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes in 1994 and approximately 21 million tonnes in 2002. Those numbers of good transported on water and rail were 40 million tonnes between 1974 and 1978, however, while the former figure went up to nearly 60 million tonnes in 1990, the latter fluctuated and went down to 37 million tonnes at the same year. Although the former latter declined in the next eight years, it then climbed up to 63 million tonnes in 2002.
