The line graph illustrates the variation in the number of goods transported in the UK over a 28-year period starting from 1979 to 2002 by road, water, rail, and pipeline.
Overall, the quantities of goods carried by these 4 types of transportation were all rise, in which road transport had the swiftest increase and rail one went up at a slowest pace.
In 1979, the figures of commodities transported by road accounted for 70 million tonnes, which was the highest number in 4 types.
The usage of water and rail to carry goods was in a nearly similar point at just slightly below 40 million tonnes. Pipeline transport was at the lowest point, which was 5 million tonnes.
Over the given period, the most significant feature is that the goods road transportation grew enormously and reached a peak at just below 100 million tonnes in 2002, a growth of approximately 30 million tonnes. Commodities carried by water and pipeline also increased considerably from roughly 39 million tonnes to 65 million tonnes, and 5 million tonnes to just over 20 million tonnes respectively. In contrast, there was a meager rise in the usage of rail for transporting goods, rising from below 40 million tonnes to above 40 million tonnes
