The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph illustrates how the number of items transferred by four distinct transport ways changed in Britain from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it is clear that the quantities of goods transported by road, water and pipelines experienced an erratic upward trend, while the number of items transferred by rail remained almost constant during the given period.
As can be seen from the graph that between 1974 and 1994, there was a fluctuated growth to around 80 million tonnes in goods transported by road. This was followed by a rapid rise in 1998. over the next 4 years, the quantities of items transferred in the UK rose negligible and by 2002, it had reached nearly 100 million tonnes.
If we look at items transported by water, it was a less popular mode of transport compared to the road. At the beginning of the period, the number of goods transferred by water stood at 40 million tonnes and increased slightly during the next 4 years. over the 4 years, there was a noticeable growth to about 55 million tonnes in transported goods by water and after that, the figure maintained almost the same level during the next 20 years and soared to nearly 70 million tonnes at the end of the period.
Regarding goods transported by pipelines between 1974 and 1994, it increased almost constantly and by 1994, it had reached a plateau and remained stable until 2002.
With respect to items transferred by rail, the figure showed an erratic downward trend from around 40 to 25 million tonnes in the years 1974-1994. over the next 8 years, the quantities of goods transported by rail back to the same number as at the beginning.
