Overall, the United Kingdom was responsible for the most CO2 emissions discharged into environment when compared to Sweden, Italy and Portugal. In addition, Sweden experiences the largest decrease in carbon emissions while Italy and Portugal saw a steadily upward trend in CO2 production.
.In 1967, the average CO2 emissions of each person of the United Kingdom was nearly 11 metric tonnes whereas the figure for Sweden was lower which was approximately 8.5 metric tonnes. In the following 10 years, Sweden registered a strong upward trend and reached a peak of about 11 metric tonnes in 1977 contrasting with the trend of the UK in this period was slight decrease. In the rest of survey, however, the same movement downwards can be seen in both the UK and Sweden, these countries also reached the lowest point of 9 metric tonnes and 5 metric tonnes respectively.
In terms of two other countries Italy and Portugal, the average CO2 emissions per capita in 1967 were slightly over 4 metric tonnes and 1 metric tonnes accordingly. These figures continued to increase during the survey time. At the end in 2007, both countries reached their top of roughly 8 metric tonnes (Italy) and 5 metric tonnes (Portugal).
