Given is the pie chart revealing the changes in household spending in the UK from 1971 to 2001
Overall, it is immediately apparent that the proportion of food was the largest of the household spending in 1971, whereas the cost of cars recorded the greatest share of the household spending in 2001
As can be seen from the graph, in 1971, the percentage of spending on food and cars were the biggest figures, at around 44% and 22%, respectively. While the cost of cars saw an upward trend with 43%, the proportion of food witnessed a downward trend at 14% over 30 years
Turning to other remaining groups, the figures spending on books and petrol declined slightly to around 1% and 8%, respectively. Furthermore, with these numbers, the cost of food became the lowest in 2001, while restaurants and computers climbed slowly to approximately 14% and 12%. During the same period, the amount of spending on furniture of the residents in the UK remained steady and just rose 1% until the end of the period
