The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pie chart is a description of the main causes of land degradation. It shows that most of global soil degradation (65%) is due to overgrazing and deforestation (35% and 30% respectively) and over-cultivation answers for around 28%, while the remaining 7% is because of other reasons.
The first thing we can see is that in the 1990s, the mentioned causes affected different regions in diverse ways. Firstly, we can see that Europe has the highest percentage of land degraded (23%) in which the most land degraded by deforestation (9.8%) followed by over-cultivation (7.7%) and lastly 5.5% by over-grazing. Secondly, Oceania ranks 2nd in total by 13%, 11.3% of which is due to over-grazing and the remaining 1.7% is due to deforestation.
In contrast, deforestation and over-grazing had minimal effect on North America (0.2% and 1.5%), whereas over cultivation was the major underlying cause by 3.3 out of 5%.
To sum up, many regions are affected by soil degradation differently, but clearly Europe suffered more than either Oceania or North America in the 1990s and their land became the least productive.
