The provided pie chart outlines the main factors for farmland degradation on over the world whilst the table illustrates the effect of land losing its productivity in the three parts of the world in the 1990s.
In general, the predominant for land degradation around the globe is due to over-grazing. Markedly, Europe’s land seemed to be the most desolate by four elements significantly.
As is presented in the pie chart, 65% of degradation is brought about by over-grazing and deforestation, constituting 35% and 30% respectively. In contrast, the proposition of over-cultivation which damaged agricultural land was approximately 28%. The non-specific factor which is categorized as “other” taken up at 7%.
Based on the table, Europe had a remarkable percentage of total barren land that was considered as the highest number among the three regions with 23%. The leading agent that deteriorate the land most was logging by 9.8%, moreover 9 times than in North America and Oceania (a large group of islands in the South Pacific including Australia and New Zealand). Even though Oceania had 0% of over-cultivation, it still faced land degradation because of two main reasons, over-grazing (11.3%) and deforestation (1.7%). Regarding North America, over-cultivation is held as the extensive cause in erode the land but still obtained a relatively small proposition, just only 3,3%.
In a nutshell, it is clear that Europe suffered more from farmland degradation than the other regions and mainly caused by deforestation and over-cultivation.
