Pie chart, land degeneration
The pie chart presents the most common causes of land degradation worldwide as well as in Europe, Oceania and North America in the 1990s.
While worldwide agricultural productivity loss is usually caused by over-grazing, in Europe, which is the territory with most degraded land, it is in great percent caused by deforestation. On the other side, North America is the least affected by the issue of the soil becoming poorer and Oceania's land mostly suffers from overgrazing.
The global split in reasons for agricultural productivity loss is rather equally split with over-grazing being the main reason with 35%, deforestation 30%, over-cultivation 28% and others at 7%.
In Europe, which with 23% of land degradation is most affected of the 3 territories, the main reason for it is deforestation with 9.8%. While in Oceania it is responsible for 1.3% out of 13% of total soil degeneration, the most common cause being overgrazing with 11.3%. The least loss of agricultural land productivity is observed in North America, where it affects 5% of the soil and is mainly an effect of over-cultivation, which accounts for 3.3% of land degradation.
