Question: The chart below shows the proportion of the energy produced from different sources in a country between 1985 and 2003. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
In 1985.
Oil 52%
Nuclear 22%
Natural gas 13%
Coal 8%
Hydrogen 4%
Other renewable 1%
In 2003.
Oil 39%
Nuclear 17%
Natural gas 23%
Coal 13%
Hydrogen 4%
Other renewable 4%
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of energy produced from various sources in a particular country between 1985 and 2003.
Overall, oil was the predominant energy source in both years, although its dominance declined over time, as did nuclear energy. Conversely, all other sources, except hydrogen, saw an increase in their contribution.
In 1985, the three main energy sources were oil, nuclear, and natural gas, accounting for 52%, 22%, and 13% of the total energy production, respectively. By 2003, oil’s share had decreased significantly to just under two-fifths (39%), while nuclear energy saw a notable reduction to 17%. Natural gas, on the other hand, experienced a substantial increase of 10 percentage points, reaching 23%, thereby overtaking nuclear as the second largest energy source.
The remaining energy sources collectively represented around one-fifth of the total in 1985. Coal and other renewables displayed an upward trend, with coal rising from 8% to 13% and other renewables increasing from 1% to 4%. Hydrogen, however, remained constant at 4%. Among the smaller sources, coal had the most significant increase, and other renewables grew to become the fifth largest energy source in 2003.
