Should customers buy foreign or native products?

Essay topics:

Should customers buy foreign or native products?

Some people today tend to buy products from foreign countries because these products may provide higher quality or cheaper price. My personal view is that allowing people to buy products from abroad is not always beneficial.

The transportation cost of delivering products from foreign country is generally high, no matter by air, sea, or on land. Such cost is consisted of the tax, personnel employment, and some operational fees, which will eventually be paid by consumers, so it makes the price of these products rather high. In addition, the transit process of the products from abroad also produce pollution from burning the fossil fuels, which can be harmful for the environment.

Another disadvantage of buying goods from other countries is that these products pose a threat to local products and may have an adverse impact on employment opportunity of local area. If some abroad products sell well and dominate the market, the competitive counterparts in the local area may lose the profit and be forced to close their stores. When local products cannot compete with foreign ones, it is difficult to develop local economy, and young people may find it hard to get employment.

On the other hand, one benefit of allowing the abroad products to sell in local market is that it can reduce the buying cost for some consumers. If those consumers want to buy a particular product which is not sold in their country, they may fly abroad to get it. In this way, consumers need to spend more money on the stuff as well as the time and energy. Besides, if we allow the abroad products to sell in the local market, this can also improve the cooperation between companies in different countries and promote the technological and economic development.

To summarize, I believe buying products from abroad can have negative effects on environment and local economy, though it may have some advantages such as lower buying cost and more cooperation between different countries.
