The table shows the proportion of workers and plants in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
Overall, while the number of total employees decreased significantly, the opposite was true for the factories. In addition, there are more male workers than female workers.
In 1851, over 287,000 men had jobs, remarkably higher than the data of women, at 190,000. Nearly 450,000 employees were working at 225 factories at the time. In the next ten years, the number of occupied men and women showed a downward trend. The opposite pattern can be seen in the figure for factories.
Over 40 years, the figures for male and female employees plummeted to under 100,000 and were only 31,000 and 30,000, respectively in 1901. Therefore, the total figure for employees also dipped to only 61,000. By contrast, more factories were established. In 1881, there were over 700 factories, but the number of factories also dropped to 600 by 1901.
