The table below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table shows data on the different systems of underground railway in big cities namely London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto, and Los Angeles. Overall, a large number of passengers get to the stations which were operated in earlier periods, particularly London, Paris, and Tokyo.

It can be seen that London’s underground railroad system; which was opened in 1863 with the longest route, 394 km, attracts scores of travellers, at 775 million annually. Afterwards, in 1900, another system in Paris was put in action with just half of London’s route, 199 km; however, the passengers’ figure of this system amounts to 1191 million. Interestingly, in the case of Tokyo, the number heads the list with 1927 million per year which is far more significant than that of London and Paris.

Meanwhile, the total number of travellers using the remaining systems is recorded at just 239 million yearly. In particular, the system in Washington DC has received 144 million people per year since its opening in 1976. With the limited length of routes, both systems in Kyoto and Los Angeles annually carried the small amount of passengers, at 45 and 50 million respectively.
