The table illustrates statistics about six different nations for the subterranean railroad systems.
It is clear that the three oldest underground systems are larger and have more passengers than the newer systems.
The London underground opened in 1863 is the oldest system and has the largest in terms of size, with 394 kilometres of route. The secondary oldest opened in 1900 is Paris, with 199 kilometres of route. However, it serves more people per year than London underground, with 1191 million passengers in the same time. Tokyo system is the third in terms of size, and it attracts the most used, with 1927 million customers per year.
Of the three newer networks, the kilometres of route in Washington DC is 126, while there only are 11 kilometres for Kyoto and 28 kilometres for Los Angeles. The Los Angeles network opened in 2001 is the newest, while the Kyoto underground is the smallest and serves only 45 passengers per year.
