Overall, there was an upward trend in the number of people using different British airports. The most popular airport in the UK was Gatwick during the period shown
In 1998, about 36.5 million travellers annual year used Gatwick airport, which was over twice times as much as that of Stansted airport. By contrast, approximately 27.2 million commuters were seen in Heathrow airport. Over the following 3 years, British witnessed a significant increase of around 21 million travellers in Heathrow airport and this figure took over that of Gatwick airport in 2000.
From 2000 to 2003, a substaintial growth was seen in the number of people who used Gatwick airport and the figure reached a peak at nearly 70 million travellers in 2003. After hitting the highest point , the number people using Heathrow airport decreased by just under 4 million travellers in 2003. By 2003, the figure for Stansted airport had considerably climbed to roughly 43 million travellers
