The given table compares four linguistic groups in terms of the average results they achieved in single sections as well as the overall band scores at the IELTS General Test in 2010.

Overall, German speakers were the most competent candidates among 4 categories, reflected by their highest band scores in most skills and overall result. In addition, all surveyed language groups were competent most in speaking section.

Turning into detail, in listening skill, while German got an average score of 6.8, that of Malay candidates was significantly lower, with 6.2 points. Likewise, they achieved band scores of 6.0 in writing and 6.6 in speaking skill, ranking fourth among all groups, compared to the result of 6.6 and 6.9 points, in the same order, of German test takers. By contrast, in comparison to Malay, whose six-point-four average reading scores were the highest surveyed result, that of German was slightly lower, with 6.3.

Regarding to other language groups, French and Indonesian candidates shared the same average points in listening and reading sections, with 6.3 and 6.1, respectively. Unlike these skills, French speakers had a writing score of 6.5, which was remarkably higher than the figure for Indonesian counterparts, with only 6.1. On the contrary, Indonesian test takers were generally more fluent in speaking section, in which their six-point-seven average score was moderately higher than that of French candidates.
