Aged people were the least likely to be poor, representing the 6% for singles 4% for couples of the total. Closely enough, couples without children were living in poverty at that time with a rate of 7%, a proportion that rises to 12% when considering couples with children.
The highest share of people living in poverty was represented by single parents, one-fifth of the total, with a percentage of 21% in 1999, almost 232000 people. Just 2 percentage points less, single people without children living in poverty were 19% of all the Australian population.
