The table shows the number of overseas students enrolling in language schools in Australia between 1996 and 1998 and the geographical area from where they come.

The table compares the quantity of foreign learners from four different continents registering to Australia’s language schools from 1996 to 1998. Overall, the total number of students from different areas decreased over the three years period and the largest amount of students learn in Australia came from Asian.

In 1996, there were almost 65000 Asian people studying second language in Australia, whilst there was nobody from Africa. On the other hands, quantity of learners originated Asian fell steadily for the following year 1997 and 1998 represented at approximately 60000 and 43500, whereas the proportion of students of African sharply increase in those years with almost 500 students.

European and Central and South American’s students’ scale had a similar pattern, which grew in 1997 and dropped in 1998. However, the amounts of European learners dramatically declined from 1997 to 1998 with 8012 and 4378 people, while Central and South American firstly stood at 839 in 1996 and double increased in 1997 then slightly decreased for the following year.
