The tables compare the selling of coffee and bananas with the Fairtrade label in the years 1999 and 2004 in five countries in Europe.
It is clear that the sales of coffee and bananas rose in five countries in the 5-years period. The UK had significantly more than any of the others in all two selling categories. In contrast, Sweden and Denmark numbers for banana sales dropped in 2004.
The UK’s figures in coffee and banana sales are the highest, with 20 and 47 million euros in 2004, after increasing dramatically from 1.5 and 15 million in 1999 respectively. Switzerland’s number for coffee sales doubled to 6 million in 2004 and the sales of bananas also saw a fivefold increase, with 5.5 million. Belgium had 1.7 million for coffee sales and 4 million for the selling of bananas in 2004.
Danish revenue was 1.8 million for selling coffee in 1999, slowly rose to 2 million in 2004. But the income for bananas was rather small, 2 million in 1999 and fell by 0.9 in 2004. Downward trends can be seen in Sweden’s number, also for banana sales, decreased by 0.8 million in 2004.
