the graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport
The line graph demonstrates how many commodities were delivered in the UK over the period of 28 years from the year 1974 by distinct types of transport namely road, water, rail and pipeline.
It is clear that the numbers of products shipped in the UK by types of transport all increased during the research. Additionally, the figure for road topped the list from the first year until the end of the period, while the bottom position belonged to pipeline.
With the regard to road and pipeline, starting at about 70 million tonnes, the number of goods shipped in the UK by road experienced a fluctuation until the end of the period, at nearly 100 million tonnes, wheares the figure for pipeline began at only 5 million tonnes in 1974, but latter it witnessed an upward trend in 1994 ( over 20 million tonnes) and ending with a period of stability , at about 21 million tonnes.
As for water and rail, in 1974 the quantities of goods delivered by rail and water were quite nearly , at about 40 and 39 million tonnes respectively, while a downward trend was seen in the number of commodities shipped by rail in 1994 and then made a recovery to soar to about 41 million tonnes, the reverse pattern could be seen in the figure for water , at about 63 million tonnes (2002).
