Increasing life expectancy is a common phenomenon in many countries around the world. Society might never be able to settle this dispute but, personally, I am of the opinion that the adverse impacts are more reasonable.
When it comes to advantages, firstly, with longer life expectancy, people have more time to enjoy their lives and engage in activities that they may not have had the opportunity to do before. This can lead to an overall improvement in the quality of life. Moreover, longer life expectancy can also bring economic benefits to a country. An aging population means more demand for healthcare services, which can create job opportunities in the healthcare sector. Increasing life expectancy also means an improved productivity. Older individuals can bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the workplace.
On the other hand, this change could be detrimental in terms of economic and social issues. Longer life expectancy can lead to increased healthcare costs. As people age, they are more likely to require medical attention, which can put a strain on healthcare systems and increase the cost of healthcare for individuals and society as a whole. Another point worth noting is increased life expectancy can also put pressure on pension systems. As people live longer, they require a longer period of retirement, which puts a strain on pension funds and can make it difficult for governments to maintain sustainable pension systems. Social issues such as ageism and elderly neglect can additionally be the results of this change. Older individuals may be seen as a burden on society and may face discrimination in the workplace and in other areas of life.
In conclusion, it is clear that while this development has ensured several necessary changes, it has also made society vulnerable to some unpleasant ones. It is important for governments and society to address the challenges that come with an aging population and work towards creating a society that supports individuals of all ages.
