Research shows that some activities are good for health and others are bad. Despite knowing that, millions of people engage in unhealthy activities. What is the cause of this? What can be done?
Although empirical studies have proven that certain activities are conducive to overall well-being and others deteriorate it, many people still engage in harmful activities. In my opinion, this is due to a myriad of societal norms, and the potential solutions would be using media power and government initiatives.
The reasons for this phenomenon are the influence of societal standards, such as the celebration of convenience and digital entertainment culture. Human beings are biologically oriented towards expediency and effortlessness, which can inadvertently cause health problems; this is evident in the current civilizations incorporating technology into daily lives through automated vehicles, elevators, remote controls, and online shopping, all of which aim to reduce the need for physical exertion. Thus, this cultural development encourages a lifestyle where minimized physical labor is pervasive. Moreover, with the growth of digital technology, people are becoming more engrossed in forms of entertainment such as video games and scrolling through social media without much mobility in the pursuit of a short burst of dopamine and pleasure to escape from the stressful day-to-day work and study lives. Consequently, these trendy societal norms have given rise to the adoption of sedentary habits among individuals despite their potential health implications.
Nonetheless, an array of targeted interventions can be implemented by governments to reverse this trend and encourage people to lead a more healthy lifestyle. Firstly, taking advantage of media power and famous public figures can significantly persuade the populace to adopt a productive lifestyle through product endorsement. For example, famous singers can update posts of their daily physical activities on social media to promote particular types of products, whether it is in the gym or outdoors. This strategy helps gradually sway and dismantle the glamorization of harmful activities among the public. Secondly, governments must implement comprehensive health literacy initiatives early on in schools nationwide. Suppose young minds are better equipped with accurate knowledge and skills to lead a healthy lifestyle filled with daily physical activities. In that case, society will have more health-conscious and productive generations later.
In conclusion, although unhealthy practices remain pervasive, individuals must understand the root causes of this trend and try to lead a healthy lifestyle in this technological world. Steps such as the enhancement of health literacy among young people and the use of media power can be taken by governments to help mitigate this widespread unhealthy proclivity.
