Some people think that everyone has the right to have access to university education and that government should make it free for all students no matter what financial background they have.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Over the past few years, the issue of whether higher education should be paid for by the government has triggered intense debate. It is my personal belief that attending college must depend on each individual student’s financial situation.
To begin with, providing free education for university students will put huge pressure on society. First, it will require a large amount of money to make sure that people have an adequate college education. Therefore, the other important fields such as health services and environment inevitably will be suffering from cutbacks and underfunding. Second, there will be an uncontrolled growth of people attending university instead of going straight to work after high school. In this case, the proportion of the population working cannot meet the quantity of labour needed in some countries. As a result, the national, as well as the global economy, will be held back.
Another reason why I disagree with the idea of giving free higher education for the public is that it may deprive people of their natural ability to overcome obstacles in life. There will be a significant number of students taking university education for granted. They do not find it compulsory to make extreme efforts to study so as that they can get a good job with a high salary to pay back the tuition fee. Everything coming too easily leads those people to the misconception of a reasonable quality of life without putting efforts. Gradually, they will become completely dependent and their ability to deal with difficulties will be eaten away.
In conclusion, for the balanced development of the society as well as individual, it seems to me that the authorities paying totally the college education is not a good idea.
