Some people from poor and rural backgrounds find it difficult to get a university education. Universities have to make it easier, especially for such groups, to get into them.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
University education has become of utmost important for students to be successful in their job, career and life. Many people argue that university education can be given only by the rich class of the society. Poor and rural background students find it impossible to pursue university education. Though I completely agree with this statement, I believe that universities should devise various options for such students to get admitted in them, instead of making the entry easier for such group.
One of the most important hurdle for poor students to enrol in universities is the huge course fees. In such cases, universities should create few scholarship programmes for poor students who are bright in a particular course. For instance, universities can conduct entrance exams for each year of the course based on which scholarships can be granted to such students. Universities can also provide concessions in buying course materials to reduce the burden of course expenses from the family of such students. For instance, based on the score in the entrance exam of few courses, Mumbai University grants various scholarships to students depending on their annual family income.
Another important programme that universities can participate into are student exchange programmes. This will help bright but poor students to travel overseas and/or to different universities under student exchange programmes and hence get an experience to socialise with students from different cultures which otherwise is very difficult for them, given their financial condition. In addition, universities can also support poor students with part-time jobs inside university campus such as in a library, or at the canteen to help them financially so that they can at least cover for their college expenses.
All in all, I strongly believe that universities should devise various programmes to help support poor and students from rural background so that no person is deprived of university education. This way education can be truly equal to all people.
