Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
To improve the quality of education, universities should spend more money on salaries for university professors
Education is considered one of cardinal building blocks of a nation or a society. More the focus is laid on the quality of education, more concrete the future it ensures. University education to be more specific, is most important of them all, as it is the last type of education an individual will take before opting for a career, in majority of cases. Universities, no doubt, put a lot of effort in inproving the quality of education they impart. They do this by practicing different measures and road maps. In the statement mentioned above, it is stated that in order to improve quality of education, universities should spend more money on salaries of the universities of the professors. I strongly disagree with this statement. In the following paragraphs, I present my justifications for the stand taken in order to bolster my opinion.
Starting with the reason that if we try to improve the quality of education by spending money on increasing the salaries of the professors, then this may not lead to desirable consequences in every case. Rather if money is spent more on the ongoing research in the university premises, that would turn out to be more fruitful. If we are imparting education to students then more focus should be put on providing and improving resources directly responsible for their education. No doubt, that professors also come under the category of resources of imparting education but increasing salaries of the professors seems rather an indirect way of improving the resources. Investing in resources, that are linked in more direct way to the education of students for example, infrastructure, research equipment, project fundings etc. would be more profitable.
Moving on, to second reason of disagreement. Spending more money on salaries of professors might relax them and they might not put the same effort in their profession as compared to earlier. Rather if salaries are incremented based on the performance of the professor, research work done by the professors and teaching hours devoted by the professor, that would seem to be more fair and logical.
Next, I want to put some light on the alternate opinion, that, it might also dicourage professors if their salaries remain stagnant for years and years despite the effort they are putting in their profession.
At the end, I would like to conclude by asserting that, it seems incoherant to spend more money on salaries of the professors while ignoring other possible sectors of inproving education. On the other hand, while increasing the salaries of the professors, their overall performance must be taken into account.
