Some teachers prefer to record the lecture in advance so that students can familiarize first. In the class, students raise questions and discuss content related to the lecture. Do you think this method effective?

Students, especially university students, are becoming less effective in the class. Therefore, some teachers suppose new methods to increase efficiency in the class. Some teacher would record their course and send it to the students before the class and student just need to discuss and ask on the class. In my opinion, this method is not effective, especially when the following points are considered.

To begin with, both students and teacher could spend doubled time in the course. The teacher need to record the class and student need to watch the record, also, both students and teacher need to attend the class. If all the teachers do like that, the workload of students would be doubled and they need to spend their sparetime rest time to deal with the course. It will do harm to both development of students and also their hearth.

Furthermore, students would barely treat the record seriously since nobody monitor them when they are watching it. Therefore, in most circumstances, teachers still need to spends time in class to teach the knowledge. Take my cousin Eric as an example, he is a middle-school student. Recently, his school ask students to watch the pre-record videos in the weekends in order to preview the class in the following week. One Saturday, when he suppose to watch the video, I saw him playing League of Legends on the computer and left the video playing on his phone. After he finally “finished watching” his video, I asked him some basic questions proposed in the video, he could barely answer any of them. I got angry on him, however, he told me his teacher would teach them in the class. Also, since this learning method was published, my cousin’s test score was much worse than before.

Admittedly, this kind of method has its own merit. For instance, those student who has a good attitude towards study could get a better understanding of the course since they could seriously treat the record and proactively ask questions in the class. However, if the record doesn’t exist at all, they could also spend time to preview and ask question to teachers after class. So their study efficiency actually don’t increase.

To sum up, from what has been discussed above, I firmly believe that this method is totally not effective.
