In the 1950s Torreya Taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya.
The reading and lecture are about the evergreen Torreya Taxifoha tree, that is on the verge of extinction. The reading passage gives three ways to address the decline of Torreya. The lecturer, on the other hand, challenges the reader and cast doubts on all three ways.
First of all, the text states the reestablishment of Torreya in the same location, where they have thrived for thousands of years. It grows in a microclimate (wetter and cooler than the surrounding area) region. The professor challenges the claims made by the reader. He claims that this solution is unlikely to be successful since the climate is strongly altered by global warming, hence wetter and drier climate would likely be expected to occur all over the regions.
Secondly, the paragraph states about the moving of Torreya to an entirely different location from Florida. Its seeds and sampling have been successfully planted in cooler climate further from northern Florida. However, the lecturer insists that it's not a good idea. He mentions the back frost trees which were planted in a new region. As a result of this, they have grown in huge numbers that they have superseded the other native tree species and its extinction. Therefore, the lecturer posits that native tree species might face unpredictable outcomes with the Torreya tree.
At last, the author declares the growth of the Torreya in a research center would closely allow scientists to monitor it. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuts by stating that the research center is not capable of keeping the trees for a long time. Torreya would not resist any kind of diseases as it would in the forest due to the availability of various plant species and its desired ecological niche.
