In 1995 a microscopic fungus called Phytophthora ramorum, or P. ramorum, was first detected in the forests of the western United States. P. ramorum infects trees and causes particularly serious damage in oak trees: in many infected oaks, leaves wither rapidly, large cracks appear in the bark, and the trees die. A spread of P. ramorum represents a serious threat to the forests in the western states. Several methods of protecting the forests have been proposed.
The reading states that the microscopic fungus known as Phytophthora Ramoroum infected the forests of the western United States and presents several procedures of protection and conservation of these forests and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that, unfortunately, these methods have severe faults and not only seem to be impractical but not have a significant impact on such forests.
First, the reading state that is preventing from spreading these fungus spores by means of impeding human-assisted spread spores by way of shoes and bicycle tires and appreciated to wash their shoes. The professor opposes this point by stating that on a rainy day, water from the rain washes all path and rout from spores; these spores could have spread by rain wash, these human effect is trivial.
Second, the article states that fungicidal use might have been a useful and advantage to protect the tree from disease. However, the professor contends that the spread of this fungicidal directly on trunk might have worked in small-scale such as a park; nonetheless, the prodigious size of forest and expansiveness of these areas maybe not a good idea; in addition, it has a costly expenditure.
Third, the reading avers that the approaches accomplish with cutting and burning the disease trees, but it also contains cutting and burning the virtually healthy oaks. The professor opposes this point by declaring that some trees such as oaks play a vital role in the earth's environment and are rare restoration and coming back of these species are an arduous effort; Hence It is costly and great ecological damage to forests.
